Clinical Pearls: Curcumin and Cancer, Melatonin and Exercise
This month we have a variety of studies providing further evidence of the importance of antioxidants. Melatonin and Exercise We usually think of melatonin in association with sleep, but it also has anti-inflammatory and anti-stress benefits. At the University of Granada, Spain, researchers tested subjects for pro-inflammatory mediators and oxidative stress after strenuous exercise. They found that the melatonin reduced muscle damage by controlling oxidative stress and the signals associated with inflammation. For those athletes ramping up their training for this season's events, here's one more tool for improving recovery time. Curcumin is Good for Just About Everything The more we research curcumin and its benefits, the more we believe it is one of those "must take" supplements. The latest research shows it to be effective in the treatment of pain and depression! Depression is a common challenge for patients dealing with chronic pain. In this study from the University of Pharmaceutical Sciences in India, curcumin was found to significantly reduce behavioural deficits associated with depression and pain. Although this study was conducted using rats, the relative safety of curcumin and its significant ability to ameliorate symptoms associated with depression is hopeful and worth further investigation. Curcumin and Cancer A review article that appeared in the journal, Anticancer Agents in Medicinal Chemistry, analyzed the role of curcumin as a potential for cancer treatment. Various aspects of curcumin in the treatment of cancer included: - aids in the suppression of cancer proliferation
- inhibits gene expression of stress proteins
- suppresses early formation of neoplastic lesions
- protective against colon, stomach and skin cancer (topical application)
- inhibits activation of mast cells
- anti inflammatory
Curcumin is the active ingredient found in turmeric, a spice used in curries and Eastern dishes. Its bioavailability (absorption) is limited, however, new nano technology does increase the bodies ability to assimilate and exploit its beneficial properties. Before adding curcumin to your supplement regime, ensure you speak with your primary care provider.
