Psych-K Case History
Ever had a time in your life when you felt stuck in one place? A time when you looked at your past and wondered what you’d accomplished? Well, you’re not alone, it’s called midlife! And you can make it a crisis or a triumph! In this issue we are veering off our normal course of providing you with current information on healing the body and instead will be exploring and sharing insights about spiritual healing and emotional growth because when we hit those middle years reconnecting or re-establishing a relationship with spirit is vital to good health and longevity. Olivia worked the same job for twenty-two years. She excelled at it, made a great living, and held the respect of her peers and co-workers. But after twenty-two years she felt she had grown as much as she could in this position. The challenge was gone. When she turned fifty, health challenges kept her distracted from the dissatisfaction but when her naturopathic physician suggested her wellness was connected to her emotions she knew something had to change.
As a Psych-K practitioner,
I asked if she would be willing to try a few sessions of this technique in order to determine the source of the dissatisfaction in her life. Also, the doctor’s hope was to see if there was a connection between Olivia’s beliefs and perceptions and her current health status. Olivia felt she had nothing to lose so she agreed to give Psych-K a try. Psych-K was developed by Robert M. Williams in 1988 to help people “quickly identify and transform beliefs that sabotage you into beliefs that support you, in any area of your life”. Most of us have self-limiting beliefs in our subconscious minds in areas such as self-esteem, health and body issues, financial prosperity, relationships, and so on. This amazing technique acknowledges that our reality is created by our beliefs. These beliefs are usually subconscious and the result of past programming, but can powerfully influence current behaviour. Many beliefs are positive and supportive, however, it self-defeating beliefs we want to change in order to get better results in our lives. The reason that it is so difficult to change limiting beliefs no matter how much will power we use, how many affirmations we do, or how much positive thinking we apply is because we are usually appealing to the conscious mind. It is the subconscious mind that is the storehouse of attitudes, values, and beliefs. To make real and lasting change we must be able to communicate with the subconscious mind and change the programming imprinted there. Olivia’s ND began the first session by establishing communication with her subconscious mind. This was done using muscle testing as a form of biofeedback to get yes or no answers. Then this statement was tested: “I feel fulfilled and passionate about my job.” When Olivia said this statement and her arm was tested, her arm went weak indicating that her subconscious mind did not agree with this statement. Then two other statements were tested. One was: “I am in control of my life and my body.” The other was: “I nurture my physical body in healthy and loving ways.” Both of these tested weak. Olivia realized that if her subconscious mind were to accept these two statements, her behaviours and actions would move her in the direction of these beliefs. This would help her determine what it was she wanted to do with the rest of her life and encourage her body to heal. The ND then did the appropriate Psych-K balance to integrate the two hemispheres of her brain to accept these two statements. After the session Olivia felt more centred and positive about accepting the suggestions that the ND had made regarding her health. She also was excited about what the future would bring. Olivia was excited about lher next naturopathic visit so she could work on changing some other long held beliefs that were non-supportive.
