Safety in Personal Health Care Products
Most cosmetics sold in the United States and Canada do not require testing by the US Food and Drug Administration before they go on the market. That honour goes to the actual company manufacturing the product, a questionable practice in light of corporations less than stellar reputation for quality control. Unfortunately, because of the lack of acountability, cosmetics, skin care products, hair products and even baby products, have been shown to contain ingredients linked to cancer, and other health concerns.
The Environmental Working Group actually found over 80% of the products they tested contained contaminants. With many of these products easily absorbed into the skin and used repeatedly, it is a concern not to be taken lightly.
Manufacturers of products from nail polish to baby moisturizer are now having to fully disclose harmful ingredients in their products and the Environmental Working Group has created an excellent database to check the safety of your health care product.
