SLIT: Sublingual Immunotherapy
Are you one of the millions of Canadians that suffer from seasonal allergies? According to the Canadian Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Foundation, up to 25% of Canadians suffer from allergic rhinitis. So you have lots of company. This year, don’t just treat the symptoms with over-the-counter, short-term remedies. Now you can actually treat the cause by developing a tolerance to specific allergens. Dr. Yim is now offering in-office allergy scratch testing for airborne allergens. Skin scratch testing is the “gold standard” in allergy diagnostics used by medical allergists. Presently we can quickly and painlessly test for allergies to trees, grasses, mold, dust mites, weeds, cat, dog, and ragweed. This can be done within a visit. Once the allergens are determined through testing, we desensitize, using sublingual (under the tongue) allergy treatment. This is accomplished via sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) using desensitization drops created by Western Allergy Services. More than 60 European clinical trials over the past 15 years have demonstrated the efficacy of SLIT. It is now the most widely prescribed form of allergy immunotherapy in Europe and is recognized by the World Health Organization. I remember over 40 years ago I had skin scratch testing done to determine the cause of my asthma. Once the offending allergens were identified, I had to go weekly to the health unit for an injection to desensitize. That therapy worked wonderfully and I was symptom free for about 20 years. Today, patients do not have to endure weekly injections. The desensitization drops can be self-administered orally at home. The drops are Health Canada and FDA approved. Don’t endure your allergies any longer; get rid of them! Contact our office to make an appointment for you skin scratch test and to get started on your desensitization program.
