Types of Blood Sugar Problems
Up to 75% of the population have blood sugar problems. They may be hypoglycemic, prediabetic, or diabetic. Some people may be suffering from a host of symptoms caused by these conditions. All three are usually the consequence of overconsumption of sweeteners, refined starches, alcohol, or caffeine. Regular exercise and proper dietary choices are the best way to avoid or treat these conditions. Hypoglycemia It is paradoxical that low blood sugar can be caused by the above factors since they all cause a rapid rise in blood sugar. However, when blood sugar rises too quickly, the pancreas may over-secrete insulin and this is followed by a subsequent crash in the blood sugar. When this happens, fatigue, depression, irritability, headaches, tremors, and a host of other symptoms and even death can occur. Pre-diabetes Pre-diabetes is also called Syndrome X, metabolic syndrome, or insulin resistance. In this condition, the pancreas must produce greater and greater amounts of insulin to keep the blood sugar normal. When there are persistently high levels of insulin in the blood, weight gain, hypertension, high cholesterol and triglycerides, fatty liver, skin tags, atherosclerosis, high iron, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and other symptoms can result. Type II Diabetes Finally, type II diabetes can be the ultimate result of a high carbohydrate diet. When the pancreas can no longer produce enough insulin to lower the blood sugar to normal, diabetes is the result. Untreated, diabetes can result in nerve damage, poor wound healing, poor immunity, cataracts, atherosclerosis, stroke, and kidney damage. Type I Diabetes This condition is caused by the beta cells in the pancreas not being able to produce insulin. This results in high blood sugar and must be controlled by taking insulin. Although insulin is needed to help control the blood sugar, diet and lifestyle can still greatly impact the course of this condition. If poorly treated, this condition can lead to the same results as type II diabetes.
