Your Liver, Your Life
In naturopathic medicine the liver is regarded as the king of the organs. Even though it is only the second largest organ in the body it is responsible for over 500 different functions. One of which is to help detoxify the blood.
Most products absorbed during digestion have to pass through the liver initially. Once there the liver either removes or modifies any toxic substance before letting the remains pass into general circulation. This screening process cleans and purifies the blood, which benefits the entire body. When the liver is not functioning properly the entire body is negatively impacted.
The importance of the liver cannot be underestimated. Many of today's diseases stem from a poorly functioning liver. Fortunately, our bodies are miracles in action and if the liver suffers damage it will continue to operate, even with a loss of up to 80%.
When the liver is not functioning properly it may not process toxins at the normal and necessary speed. This causes a build up of toxins in the bloodstream. For example, if the hormone estrogen is not broken down by the liver it accumulates in the bloodstream causing a potentially dangerous build up. This dangerous build up can lead to more serious conditions such as PMS and breast cancer. The following is a list of some of the conditions that may be caused by an overloaded liver and toxic circulatory system:
There are warning signs of a toxic liver, ones you should heed and take action to fix. Many of the them are common and often associated with other conditions so if you suffer from any of the above conditions, contact your health care practitioner immediately. A detoxification program that includes restorative and healing components is the best way to give your liver a rest and to stimulate its miraculous ability to cleanse the blood and maintain health. Short, gentle detoxification programs that take into account your current health status, lifestyle factors and age are most important. For women, they also need to consider their transitional phase, whether they are pre or post menopausal.
